ADDRESS: 17 Złota Street

OPENING DATE: unknown

One of the most famous cafés in occupied Warsaw. Exceptional artists worked there, famous mainly for their pre-war movies. The audience at 7 Złota Street was always great. The guests wanted to meet Adolf Dymsza and many other actors. At some point in the café's life, the artists built a mezzanine inside, where they created a theatre stage. From then on, the place was called “Na Antresoli” and shows were staged there every night.

WSPOMNIENIA

Popular artists played two roles there: waiters and performers of their gigs. The shows took place on a miniature mezzanine stage, and that is where the name of the place comes from.

Conspiracy

Many of those wanted by the Gestapo or Kripo were hiding in the café. Among others, Czesław Ostańkowicz, an officer of the Warsaw Defence Brigade, editor of the  “Gazeta Oblężnicza” [Pol. “The Siege Paper”] during the Siege of Warsaw, found there a safe asylum. After the city was taken, he was an editor of the underground paper “Biuletyn” [Pol. “Bulletin”]. Its distributors were [Zbigniew] Sawan, [Stanisława] Wysocka, [Adolf] Dymsza, [Jerzy] Pichelski, [Irena] Malkiewicz-Domańska.

HUMOUR

It was there, where his best jokes were born, which then became viral around the country. […] After the shows […] anti-German anecdotes and limericks were told. It was Adolf Dymsza's very own joke, that all the lampposts in Warsaw were reserved “nur für Deutsche” [Ger. 'only for the Germans']!

Igo Sym

One day Igo Sym visited the café. […] He offered to [Adolf] Dymsza to play in the farce Papa coś nabroił, however Dodek decisively refused. […] – “I have an agreement with friends and I can’t do both; shows at ‘Na Antresoli’ and the farce about ‘Papa’[…]. But I promise you Igo that when the farce in Stadttheater ends, I will gladly perform at the Polish Theatre - he added with a squint […]”.

Adolf Dymsza's joke

I am Adolf. I have a nice suit. On one side lapel on the other lapel [Pol. "klapa" - bust, lapel].
